Saturday at the Boys' Home in Nakuru.
Saturday was a special day visiting with the GCC boys in Nakuru. We
started our day by visiting the old boys' home in the inner city part of
Nakuru--a very small campus in a rough neighborhood. This was where
CMIA began their ministry to help get orphaned boys in Nakuru get off
the streets and into a good Christian environment. Since then, many of these young men have gone on to become successful in their careers, leaders in churches, and godly family men.
Since moving the boys to the new facility on several acres in the hills
surrounding Nakuru, the old school is being transformed into an
educational facility to teach computer skills. This is still run by
CMIA, and when we visited Saturday morning, there were 8 students
working independently on computers, with the assistance of their
instructor.
Then, we were soon on our way to new GCC boys'
home, where 60 boys are currently living. I have to say the location of
the site and the facilities are magnificent! The school overlooks the
city and Lake Nakuru with grand vistas of the surrounding area. This
site is not only home to the boys, but it is also a working farm where
the boys can learn how to grow crops and raise animals. There were two
cows, and several goats and chickens wandering the grounds.
Our first order of business was a quick tour of the facilities: the boys
dorm rooms, kitchen, a rec room, offices and roof top veranda with
amazing views of the area. We were then lead to the church, also on
site, where the boys were waiting for us.
When we entered the
church where the boys were assembled, we were given a heroes welcome,
such as I have never encountered before! The boys shouted and cheered
and clapped for us for several minutes. After prayers and introductions,
the boys entertained us in the way they know best: Dancing and music!
It was amazing to watch the boys dance! They have moves and rhythm
parallel to dancing I've seen on television! But even more importantly,
you could see how much they loved dancing. Young and old joined in, and
they spurred one another on with cheers and shouts as they danced. We
felt very blessed and could sense the joy of the Lord in that place.
